PROGRAM

Michael Mao Dance is headed to the Edinburgh Festival! Before they jet off to Scotland, the company will make its "Bon Voyage" appearance at the Chelsea Art Museum. The program features the three dances that will be presented at the festival:
WEAVING (1999)

The program opens with the very popular Weaving, a tour de force of improbable physicality to hypnotic Kodo drumming performed with high octane vigor.
LORCA LIBRE (2009)

Next will be Lorca Libre, choreographed to verses by the Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca shortly before his 10 month sojourn in NYC and immediately after, while he was in Havana Cuba. Lorca by this period was already steeped in Gypsy lore. Yearning, foreboding, love and joy, central to Lorca, are woven into an emotional tapestry through movement, images and the deep-song flamenco singing of Lorca's verses by Esperanza Fernandez and Manzanita.
CHINA MOVES - Phase I (2010 - 2012)

Concluding the first part of the evening will be China Moves - Phase I, a collaboration between Mao and Huang Ruo, whose music is currently featured at Chelsea Art Museum. Previewed in April at Chelsea Art Museum, another movement has been added to China Moves - Phase I and was presented in June at the LaMama Moves! Dance Festival and on July 16 in Bryant Park.
Michael's dancers come from all over America and from all over the world. Their quest for expression through movement has brought them to New York City. These vibrant young dancers embody the energy, talent and diversity of NYC, and find voice in dance works developed by Mao.
Dancers: Efemena Alibo (Lagos, Nigeria), Hugues Asdrubal (Guadaloupe, France), Kristin Draucker (York, Pennsylvania) , Antonio Pio Fini (Calabria, Italy); Osamu Inoue (Fukuoka, Japan); Juan Michael Porter II (Mobile, Alabama) Marcos Vedoveto (Sao Paolo, Brazil) Katlyn Baskin Waldo (Dallas, Texas); Nao Yamada (Chiba, Japan); Stacy Yoshioka (Honolulu, Hawaii)
INNER FLICKERING LIGHT

The performance “Inner Flickering Light” by Lindsay Jones is a focused look inside the internal eternal being, examining the tension and release that resides within.
Maurice Merlau-Ponty writes "Consciousness, the world, and the human body as a perceiving thing are intricately intertwined and mutually engaged." The performance by Ms. Jones, featuring three female dancers enacting Butoh-inspired movements, conveys this concept by integrating performance art, fashion design, lighting design, and avant garde classical composition.
Lindsay Jones is the designer of the collection Outlaws of the Border (www.outlawsoftheborder.com). She will be collaborating directly with artist/illustrator Emily Caisip and artist Andrew Yang. Hair by Dennis Gots. Lighting By Jason Sinipoli. Classical composer John Magee will perform live at the event.
