RAPHAEL RUBINSTEIN
ON FRENCH WRITER MARCEL COHEN
OCTOBER 29TH, 2003 AT 7PM
Please join the Chelsea Art Museum on October 29th for an
evening with Raphael Rubinstein speaking about French writer Marcel
Cohen and reading
from his translation of Cohen’s Letter to Antonio Saura.
Written in Ladino, for centuries the lingua franca of Sephardic Jews,
Letter to Antonio Saura was first published in 1985 in Spain, with drawings
by
Saura (1930-1998), who was one of Spain’s most prominent postwar
painters. Subsequently, Cohen translated his Ladino original into French
and a bilingual edition appeared in France in 1997. Part of Rubinstein’s
translation of the French version of the book recently appeared in the
journal Open City. Several of Cohen’s books have been published in
English, including Mirrors (Green Integer, 1998) and The Emperor Peacock
Moth (Burning Deck, 1995). His most recent book is Faits: Lectures courantes á l’ usage
des grands débutants (Gallimard, 2002).
Raphael Rubinstein’s books include The
Basement of the Cafe Rilke (1997), Postcards
from Alphaville (2000) and the forthcoming Polychrome
Profusion: Selected Art Criticism 1990-2002 (all published by Hard Press).
Free Admission.
