Music Programs (Introductions)

2pm
Richard Nunn (New Zealand)

Nunn performs on traditional Maori Instruments of New Zealand with accompanying electronics and discusses his concepts of combining traditional instruments with new technologies.

One of New Zealand's most remarkable musicians, Richard Nunns, a European New Zealander, has become a living authority on Taonga Puoro — the traditional musical instruments of the Maori, the indigenous people of New Zealand.

This has been a journey that has required respect, perseverance and sensitivity, characteristics that emerge in the depths of his own music. The unique and compelling voices of nga taonga puoro, the traditional instruments, have attracted the interest of a number of New Zealand's distinguished composers including Gillian Whitehead, and leading performers including the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and the New Zealand String Quartet.

4pm Timucin Sahin (Turkey)

Sahin uses interactive electronics and fretless electric guitars, incorporating different influences from contemporary music, jazz, and non-western music improvisation techniques.

Sahin has lived in The Netherlands since 1992. He studied jazz guitar and classical composition at Amsterdam Conservatory and Manhattan School of Music. He tours widely and he has been awarded several important prizes, among them, in 2001, first prize at the prestigious Dutch Jazz Competition with his contemporary jazz trio 'On the Line'.

"Sahin has chops galore ... The chemistry evoked by Sahin's at times complex, beautiful compositions and the drummerless line-up make this an intriguing, original and witty listen." -- Jazzwise May 2004

Workshop and "Introductions" music programs sponsored by Electronic Music Foundation and the Roland Corporation.
