Over the last three years Jessica Stockholder has made monoprints
at Two Palms Press in New York using a special high-pressure press originally
designed to stamp rubber. These prints, each one of a kind, are composed
out of a motley list of materials: fake fur, upholstery fabric, aluminum
roofing material, Styrofoam, paint, orange peels. Taken through processes
of collaging, compacting, and cross-sectioning, its surfaces and contours
multiplied and compounded through repeated manipulations and passes through
the press, Stockholder's prints bristle with jump-cuts and collisions,
brusque interruptions and jarring new starts, with the bracing sense of
a riotously inventive and at the same time a deftly controlled imagination
at work. (The show is accompanied by an essay.)
