History in the Aeroflot Posters

Aeroflot

A unique exhibition entitled 'History in the Aeroflot Posters' , which enjoyed great success in Moscow earlier this year, is opening at the Chelsea Art Museum on September 22, 2008. The exhibition of advertising and social posters from different periods of Soviet and Russian aviation is dedicated to the 85th anniversary of Russian Aviation and the 40th anniversary of the first Aeroflot flight to New York.
Russian State Library, Russian State Archive of Social and Political History, Aeroflot Museum, "Contact-Culture" Publishing House, “New Gallery” Art Foundation, and “Ogonyok” magazine bring together this unique collection of more than 60 posters. The brilliant exhibition illustrates the history of civil aviation in Russia, as well the major events of Russian modern history, starting from 1920s, when the first Russian commercial air carrier was established, all the way to the 1990s, a period of major transformation for Russia.

"It is a very honorable and exciting opportunity for a commercial company of any scale and maturity to be a part of an art exhibition" said Lev Koshlyakov, Deputy General Director of Aeroflot. "This poster collection is steeped in turbulent Russian history and represents an incredibly rich tapestry of forgotten historical facts and milestones.  Rediscovering the stories and characters featured on these posters was similar to visiting a carnival of endless entertainment”.  Mr. Koshlyakov expressed his strong belief that, “this exhibition is guaranteed to be an excellent event for all residents and visitors of New York, not only a financial center of the world, but also a cultural capital of the USA”.

“Our vision is a commitment to art as a living entity which reacts and interacts with us and changes our outlook, gives us insight into historical events, changes our vision of other countries" – said co-founder and President of the museum Dorothea Keeser. “The idea of this exhibition has a lot in common, since its mission is to look at the history of Russia, the history of aviation, and through the art of posters open new facets of relationships between our countries.”
