PHYSICAL THEATER AND CELLO IMPROVISATION

with
Cassie Terman, Shinichi Momo Koga, and Keren Rosenbaum

Saturday, July 16, 2005, 2 PM

The three performers enter the stage empty and build a work from the first moments and gestures. Terman and Koga play in a highly physical realm that includes sound and language to explore an often surreal yet utterly immediate world. They are joined by Keren Rosenbaum on cello. Comic dilemma, the pathos of human frailty, music and associative narratives are woven into a cohesive, wild, delicate, and unpredictable whole.

About the Performers

Keren Rosenbaum A prolific composer and talented flautist from a young age, Rosenbaum studied with renowned Israeli composers Arik Shapira and Leon Shidlovski during her studies at Tel Aviv University and continued developing her distinctive style at the Royal Conservatory, The Hague. After directing and producing "New Voices," the first interdisciplinary festival in Israel, she founded the Reflex Ensemble, a unique collective of classical musicians. Since 1998 the Ensemble has challenged the old-school classical music tradition in its focus on performance, openness to new technologies, incorporating lighting and sound artists as equal members, and choosing not to stage its performances in concert halls. Keren is currently looking ahead to the staging of her interdisciplinary opera "Chat," scheduled for 2006 in New York.

Shinichi Momo Koga's productions have been experienced since 1988 throughout the North American Continent, Europe and Japan. A photographer, filmmaker and theater actor/director, Koga became primarily known as a Butoh dancer after 1991 when he began dancing under Hiroko and Koichi Tamano. In 1994, he created the group Uro Teatr Koku with Alenka Mullin Koga which became inkBoat in 1998.Additionally, he collaborates with Yumiko Yoshioka and TEN PEN CHii (Germany: 1996-2001), Do Theatre (Russia: 1997-present), Shadowlight Theatre (USA: 1993-1997) and the group adapt in Berlin with Minako Seki, Sten Rudstøm, Yuko Kaseki and Yael Karavan.

Cassie Terman is a performer, writer, and teacher. Since 1990 she has been performing improvisations nationally and internationally, both solo and in collaboration. She has worked for over 14 years with Ruth Zaporah in Action Theater, and frequent collaborators include Sten Rudstrom, Shinichi Koga, Leigh Evans, and the Reflex Ensemble. For the last 11 years she has been teaching throughout the U.S. at universities, festivals, and theater and dance organizations.
