Janne Rättyä is a world-renowned Finnish accordionist as clearly evident in his recordings, impressive international concert programs and reviews. His talent places him among the world's top instrumentalists and innovators. On March 17, Rättyä will make his NY debut at the Chelsea Art Museum in a solo recital. He has been a member of The Project Room's resident ensemble, Reflex, since 2001, and will also participate in their NY debut concerts on March 22 at the museum and March 24 at Symphony Space. Mr. Rättyä's talent and art, which have been received with great admiration in Europe and Japan, honor his Finnish roots and celebrate best in Finnish culture and art

Janne Rättyä, born in 1974 in Finland, was accepted at the early age of 11 as a student of the Youth Academy of Sibelius-Academy in Helsinki. He continued his studies at the soloist department of the Sibelius-Academy with lecturer Matti Rantanen passing his Master of Music degree in 1998. Janne Rättyä went on to study at the Folkwang Hochschule Essen with Prof Mie Miki finishing his post-graduate Konzert-Examen in 2000. He received scholarships from the Wihuri Foundation, the Finnish Cultural Foundation, the DAAD and the Finish Art Council.

Janne Rättyä was awarded numerous prices in national and international classical accordion and soloist competitions, most notable the 1st Prize in the 'Arrasate Hiria' competition in Spain in 1996 and the 2nd Prize in the soloist competition organized by the Classic FM Finland in 1996.

Rättyä has given concerts as a soloist as well as a chamber musician in most European countries. Since his debut in the Voris Hall in Tokyo in 1999 he has also toured Japan frequently. During the year 2002, among other engagements, he will have his debut in the Chamber Hall of the Berlin Philharmonie in the debut series of DeutschlandRadio Berlin. Janne Rättyä has been regularly recording since 1995 for the Finnish National Radio YLE.

His first solistic CD, Inventions and Sinfonias by J.S.Bach, was published by the German label Castigo in 2001 (Castigo Catalogue 02412). More recordings by Castigo will follow in the near future. Rättyä has been closely collaborating with composers like Gerhard Stäbler, Frangis Ali-Sade, Uljas Voitto Pulkkis and many others to create new music for his young instrument.

Since 2000 he has been lecturer for the classical accordion at the Sibelius-Academy in Helsinki and at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen.

Janne's absolute technical freedom enables him to use an even, crystal clear leggiero touch throughout his performance – one of the most difficult touches to achieve on the accordion. Janne Rättyä was born in 1974 in Finland. He studied with Heidi Velamo, Matis Rantaned and Mie Miki, and received a scholarship from the "Finnish Cultural Foundation," Wihuri Foundation and the Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienst. He won first prize in the "Arrasate Hiria" competition in Spain in 1996. Concert tours have taken him to various countries in Europe and to Japan. Since 2000 he has been a lecturer at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and at the Folkwang Hochshule in Essen.

Inventions and Sinfonias by J.S.Bach is one of few classical accordion recordings (if not the only one) completely dedicated to the music of J.S. Bach, in particular to his Two Part Inventions and Three Part Sinfonias, and as such this recording is a valuable contribution towards the classical accordion recordings. It is common practice on other instruments such as violin, piano, etc. to have whole cycles of a composer's works recorded, for that matter there are cycles of Bach's works recorded by many different artists, but this is not often found in the world of classical accordion.

In that regard this recording by Janne Rättyä is probably unique, plus the fact that his performance is of the highest level by any standard, makes this recording a must in the phono-library of any classical accordionist. Rättyä has a deep and refined understanding for the style. His polyphonic thinking is amazing as a result of which his voice-leading is masterful. At times the impression is that he plays on a non-bellows instrument and can control the volume of every voice, making one
Rättyä's performance is intelligent and sophisticated. He is a professional of a very high standard and this recording is highly recommended.
